Tachykinin stimulation effects on α-amylase, protease and lipase activities in midgut of American cockroach, Periplaneta americana (Blattodea: Blattidae)

چکیده
The effect of a neuropeptide, the tachykinin on α-amylase, protease and lipase activities in the midgut of American cockroach, Periplaneta americana (Linnaeus) is evaluated . Immunohistochemical reactivities against tachykinin (tachykininir) were detected in the midgut. Tachykinin-ir cells in three regions (anterior, median and posterior) of the midgut were counted in normally fed, starved for four weeks and refed cockroaches. The number of tachykinin-ir cells decreased during 4 weeks of starvation and increased 3 h after refeeding. The results of the competitive ELISA were consistent with the profile of immunohistochemical reactivity. Incubation of the dissected midgut with tachykinin led to an increase in α-amylase, protease and lipase activities while the buffer remained ineffective. Tachykinin injection into the hemocoel increased α-amylase, protease and lipase activities, but PBS injection showed no sign of effectiveness. The results seggest that nutrients upregulate midgut cells secreting tachykinin causing further activities of digestive enzymes.

متن کاملEpidemiology and Spatial Relationships of Bacteria Associated with Periplaneta americana (Blattodea: Blattidae) in Central Texas
Identifying cockroach (Order: Blattodea) populations is important to understanding the ability of surrogate species indirectly affecting humans by their ability to vector disease-causing organisms including bacteria. These interactions may have potentially deleterious health consequences on animal and/or human populations. In this study, American cockroaches, Periplaneta americana were sampled ...

American cockroaches, Periplaneta americana (Blattodea: Blattidae) (L.), are common pests of urban environments. Analyzing spatial distribution of P. americana populations in an artificial, outdoor environment provided insight of gene flow among populations collected in central Texas. This information provides a better understanding of how and if populations were segregated, or if there was a s...
متن کاملDistribution of digestive enzymes in the gut of American cockroach, Periplaneta americana (L.)
Adult male and female cockroaches, Periplaneta americana (L.) were assayed for the presence of digestive enzymes in the fore-, midand hindgut regions. Activities of αamylase, β-amylase, γ-amylase, proteinase and lipase were detected in the three gut regions except for the absence of γamylase and lipase in female hindgut. The presence of these enzymes partly explains the polyphagous feeding habi...
متن کاملIndividual Thigmotactic Preference Affects the Fleeing Behavior of the American Cockroach (Blattodea: Blattidae)
Positive thigmotactic behavior is associated with the ability to hide from predators and is important to explain aggregation and collective patterns in various animals. For example, this behavior has been observed in woodlice, domiciliary cockroaches, ants, and fish. Lately, research on different species is focused on the importance of animal personality for ecological and evolutionary processe...
